Critics’ week: Pocket Card Jockey’s inevitable hurtle towards the abyss

Game Freak’s Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On is now available on Apple Arcade as a remake of the original Pocket Card Jockey from Nintendo 3DS. VGC deputy editor Chris Scullion recommended the game as a healthier alternative to predatory mobile games like Disney Solitaire. Upon revisiting the game himself, Scullion was immediately reminded of why he had loved it, finding the title as engaging as he remembered.

The original Pocket Card Jockey was delisted when Nintendo closed the 3DS eShop, rendering it inaccessible to players on its original platform. The Apple Arcade release represents a return to availability for the beloved title. This exemplifies broader challenges in game preservation and digital accessibility, where platform discontinuation can remove games from circulation, though remakes and re-releases on new services can help restore player access to previously unavailable titles.
