Pokémon Champions launches to mixed reception, as performance woes and competitive changes turn some away

Pokémon Champions launched as a free-to-start competitive battle simulator aimed at becoming the official platform for competitive Pokémon play, but the release has been marked by significant bugs, missing content, and widespread player disappointment.

The most critical issue involves a transfer bug from Pokémon Home. Players attempting to transfer Pokémon to Champions encounter error code 9007, which traps their Pokémon in an inaccessible state—they cannot be transferred into the game, traded within Pokémon Home, or returned to their original games.

Beyond technical problems, players have raised serious concerns about false advertising and content gaps. Multiple features prominently displayed in pre-release trailers, including certain Mega Evolutions like Raichu’s shown in the official Pokémon Day trailer, are absent from the final game. The game currently supports only 186 Pokémon, featuring primarily fully evolved forms with rare exceptions such as Pikachu.

Additional gameplay concerns include a draw mechanic for timed-out matches that applies regardless of either player’s standing, potentially allowing players to avoid ranking losses.

Some positive aspects have been noted. The game reportedly delivers snappy competitive battles and provides an accessible entry point for newcomers to competitive Pokémon play. It launched with a battle pass system, Mega Stone mechanics, Pokémon recruitment systems, and mystery gift distributions.

The community consensus characterizes the game as a “fleshed out beta” rather than a polished release, with experienced competitive players and fans expressing disappointment that the official competitive platform launched with such significant limitations and unresolved issues.
