Frostpunk studio reveals dark and twisted farming thriller Crop, which blends Stardew Valley with the eeriness and mystery of Twin Peaks
11 Bit Studios’ publishing arm has unveiled Crop, a farming simulator developed by small Norwegian team Carbonara Games. The game blends the cozy farming mechanics of Stardew Valley with the dark, eerie atmosphere of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, creating what the developer describes as a “gritty farming thriller.”
The game’s premise is notably darker than typical farming sims. Rather than inheriting a farm from a beloved relative, players begin by crawling naked out of the trunk of a crashed car in the woods. Upon reaching the farmland, they discover the previous farmer is dead. The game’s tutorial teaches players how to use a shovel by having them dig the previous farmer’s grave, immediately establishing the unsettling tone.
Despite its horror elements and grim setting, Crop maintains farming simulation mechanics familiar to cozy game fans, balancing gameplay with narrative-driven mystery. The game represents an interesting convergence of genres, combining relaxing agricultural gameplay with psychological thriller storytelling. 11 Bit Studios has built a reputation for publishing distinctive indie titles like Indika, Thaumaturge, and Death Howl, making Crop the latest addition to their roster of unconventional games appealing to players seeking something darker than traditional farming simulations.
