Dune: Awakening is finally making Deep Desert and shipwreck PvP fully optional

Funcom has announced a significant strategic shift for Dune: Awakening, making player-versus-player content fully optional after spending nearly a year refining the game’s competitive systems. The developer stated it needs to “rethink our approach and underline the PvE-first nature of the game,” indicating that substantial player feedback prompted this fundamental design change.

The update will disable all PvP zones within Hagga Basin and introduce separate PvE-focused alternatives, allowing players to experience the game’s content without mandatory player-versus-player encounters. This represents a notable reversal from the game’s original design, which emphasized PvP as a core gameplay element.

Beyond restructuring the PvP system, Funcom is also implementing self-hosted server options, giving players and communities greater control over their gaming environments. These changes reflect the developer’s commitment to accommodating different playstyles and making Dune: Awakening more accessible to PvE-focused players who prefer cooperative or single-player experiences. The shift demonstrates how live-service games continue to evolve based on player preferences and community feedback.
