Ex-Bethesda Exec Says The Elder Scrolls 6 Maker Isn’t Part Of Something ‘Genuine’ Or ‘Authentic’ At Microsoft
Pete Hines, former Vice President of Communications and Marketing at Bethesda Softworks, has revealed his reasons for retiring in 2023 after nearly 24 years with the studio. In a recent interview, Hines expressed significant concerns about the company’s direction under Microsoft ownership, which acquired Bethesda’s parent company Zenimax in 2021 for $7.5 billion.
Hines stated he felt unable to effectively manage Bethesda’s reputation and run the studio properly following the acquisition, describing himself as “powerless” to do his job as he saw fit. Without directly naming Microsoft, he suggested the tech giant has proven to be a poor cultural fit for Bethesda, with comments implying the studio has been “damaged” and “abused” under the new ownership structure.
Despite his departure three years ago, Hines remains a vocal defender of Bethesda’s technical achievements and game design philosophy. He has argued that the studio deserves greater recognition for its expertise in creating complex, immersive open worlds, challenging comparisons to other studios’ work by suggesting players attempt similar mechanics in competing titles like Red Dead Redemption 2.
Hines’ departure came shortly after Starfield’s release, suggesting his decision to leave was likely already in progress before the Microsoft acquisition’s full integration became apparent. His comments now provide rare insight into internal challenges at Bethesda since joining Microsoft’s gaming division, raising questions about the publisher’s management of major acquired studios and their cultural integration into the larger organization.
