Industry Legend Ron Gilbert Is Bringing His Auto-Scrolling RPG to PS5 Next Week

Legendary game designer Ron Gilbert and his studio Terrible Toybox are bringing their auto-scrolling roguelike RPG, Death By Scrolling, to PlayStation 5 on April 16, 2026. Previously announced for PC at Gamescom Opening Night Live last year, the game is now confirmed for imminent console release.

Death By Scrolling features pixelated graphics and challenges players to escape from purgatory by controlling one of several characters with unique abilities. The game’s defining mechanic is its continuous auto-scrolling, which forces players to constantly move forward or risk being caught by Death itself. Players must navigate treacherous levels while earning gold to spend at shops for upgrades and power-ups that enhance their character’s capabilities.

The roguelike structure encourages multiple playthroughs, allowing players to discover new strategies and build variations with each run. Beyond the primary escape objective, the game features side quests that provide additional challenges and rewards during gameplay. The release marks another significant title from the veteran designer, known for his influential contributions to the adventure game genre. With its launch just days away, Death By Scrolling represents a notable arrival for PS5 owners seeking indie-flavored roguelike experiences with classic game design sensibilities.
