Phantom Blade Zero developer rejects gen-AI and promises “every single piece of content in our game has been crafted by the hands of real artists”

Phantom Blade Zero, the wuxia-inspired action game from Chinese developer S-Game, is entering its final development stages ahead of a 2026 PS5 launch. As the game approaches completion, S-Game has issued a statement firmly rejecting the use of generative AI in development, asserting that “every single piece of content in our game has been crafted by the hands of real artists.”

CEO Qiwei Liang emphasized the studio’s commitment to artistic integrity, stating the team will not use “AI visual tech that could alter our artists’ original creative intent.” The statement comes in response to controversy surrounding Nvidia’s DLSS 5 upscaling technology. Phantom Blade Zero appeared on a list of games supporting the new standard, which has faced significant player backlash for producing distorted and artificial-looking effects—nicknamed “slopface”—particularly on NPC character models.

The studio stressed that the game’s character models are created using 3D scanning technology paired with traditional artistic refinement, rather than generative methods. S-Game is channeling all remaining development resources toward pushing every aspect of the game “to the absolute limit of our capabilities,” demonstrating a commitment to quality over technological shortcuts.

This declaration reflects broader industry tensions around AI implementation in games, with some developers adopting generative tools while others, like S-Game, position themselves as preserving traditional craftsmanship. For a highly anticipated PS5 exclusive, the studio’s stance may resonate with players concerned about artistic authenticity and visual quality in an increasingly AI-augmented development landscape.
