To Stand Out, This TTRPG Podcast Network Chose The Risky Route Of Avoiding D&D
The Glass Cannon Network, an established name in the tabletop roleplaying game actual play podcasting space since 2015, has found success by deliberately avoiding Dungeons & Dragons. Co-founder Troy Lavallee credits much of their longevity and popularity to this strategic choice, selecting instead to focus on Pathfinder as their primary game system.
According to Lavallee, the network’s philosophy centers on authentic enthusiasm for the games they play. “We just play Pathfinder, the game that we know and the game that we love, because if we’re infectious about how much we enjoy this game, listeners—whether they even play the game or not, will listen,” he explained. This approach prioritizes genuine passion over capitalizing on D&D’s massive cultural presence, betting that quality content and authentic engagement would resonate with audiences regardless of the system’s popularity.
The Glass Cannon Network represents one of the earliest major channels in a space that has existed for roughly a decade. Their decision to chart a different course from the D&D-dominated landscape shows a willingness to take risks in order to differentiate themselves. Rather than competing directly with other D&D-focused podcasts, they built their audience on the foundation of alternative systems and genuine enthusiasm.
Currently, the network is expanding their content with Lovecraftian horror-themed programming across multiple productions. This content strategy demonstrates their continuing commitment to diverse storytelling within the TTRPG podcast space.
