Cult horror game Doki Doki Literature Club pulled from Google Play Store for its “depiction of sensitive themes” and content that “violates” its TOS

Doki Doki Literature Club, the acclaimed psychological horror visual novel, has been removed from the Google Play Store due to its depiction of sensitive themes and violations of Google’s Terms of Service. The game, which initially launched as freeware before becoming available free on Steam nearly a decade ago, was ported to both iOS and Android in December 2025. However, while it remains accessible on Apple’s App Store, Google has delisted the title from its platform.

The developers stated they are “continuing to do everything we can to find a path forward for getting DDLC reinstated on the Google Play Store,” indicating they intend to work with Google to resolve the content dispute.

Doki Doki Literature Club is known for its deceptive presentation and disturbing psychological horror elements that subvert typical visual novel conventions. The game’s narrative addresses themes including psychological manipulation and self-harm, which likely contributed to Google’s decision to remove it for containing sensitive content that violates store policies.

The removal highlights the ongoing tension between artistic expression and platform content moderation. While DDLC’s cult status and critical acclaim have been established over years of availability on PC platforms, mobile storefronts maintain stricter content guidelines. The divergence between Apple and Google’s approaches to distributing the game underscores their different moderation philosophies, with the same title remaining available on iOS while being delisted from Android’s primary marketplace.
