Exit 8’s director cut this scene because it was too scary for Cannes

Genki Kawamura, acclaimed writer-director and producer of anime films including Your Name, Suzume, Mirai, and Weathering With You, has written the novelization of his horror film Exit 8, based on an indie game of the same name. Rather than maintaining identical versions across media, Kawamura created distinct adaptations of the story for the game, film, and novel formats.

One of the most significant differences between versions involves a particularly horrifying scene that Kawamura included in his creative vision but ultimately removed from the theatrical film for its presentation at Cannes Film Festival. The scene’s intensity was deemed too disturbing for the festival screening. The novelization preserves this darker material, allowing readers to experience the unfiltered version of Kawamura’s original creative intent.

The multi-format approach showcases how the same narrative can be tailored to suit different media and audience expectations. Kawamura’s unique position as both a celebrated filmmaker and bestselling novelist enabled him to oversee these transmedia adaptations while balancing artistic vision with the practical constraints of different exhibition venues and formats.
