League of Legends Won’t Get a Large Mid-Season Update This Year

League of Legends will forego its traditional large mid-season update in 2026, marking a significant departure from Riot Games’ previous approach to seasonal content. According to lead gameplay designer Matt ‘Phroxzon’ Leung-Harrison, this decision aims to avoid alienating newer players with frequent large-scale changes.

Historically, League’s Season 2 has seen major patches timed around the Mid-Season Invitational. Last year exemplified this pattern with a comprehensive overhaul of ADC (Attack Damage Carry) items. However, 2026 will deviate from this formula, with Locke—the newly leaked champion—serving as the only substantial new addition to the game this year.

Phroxzon explained that large-scale updates deployed outside of preseason create retention challenges for the playerbase, particularly newer players who struggle to adapt to significant gameplay shifts mid-season. By reducing the frequency of major patches, Riot appears to be prioritizing accessibility and player experience over frequent meta-defining changes, allowing the community more time to settle into the current state of the game.
