The Super Mario Galaxy Movie beats Project Hail Mary to become the highest grossing film of 2026 so far

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has become 2026’s highest-grossing film, surpassing Project Hail Mary at the global box office. The animated sequel has earned $629 million worldwide—$308 million domestically in North America and $320 million internationally, with $37.4 million from the UK and Ireland alone.

Released at the start of April, the film opened with an impressive five-day global total of $372.5 million ($190.1 million domestic, $182.4 million international). In its second weekend, Mario collected $83.5 million from 81 international territories. While these opening numbers represent a slight decrease compared to the original 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie, which made $204 million domestically and $377 million globally in its opening five days, the Galaxy installment’s sustained performance has propelled it to the top of 2026’s box office rankings.

Project Hail Mary, the Ryan Gosling-led space epic, crossed the $500 million milestone but remains second in the year’s box office race. The strong performance of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie underscores the enduring commercial appeal of Nintendo’s flagship franchise, building on the original film’s $1 billion+ global success.
