Hastr0 Claims Overwatch Is Back as an Elite Esport

Overwatch is experiencing a resurgence as an esport, according to Mike “Hastr0” Rufail, the owner of esports organization Envy/Dallas Fuel. Rufail expressed optimism on Twitter about the game’s trajectory in the competitive scene.

The renewed interest follows Blizzard’s strategic changes to the franchise. The developer removed “2” from the game’s title and reverted the gameplay to 6v6 format—a return to the original game’s structure that had been abandoned with Overwatch 2. Accompanying these changes, Blizzard simultaneously released five new heroes to refresh the gameplay experience, with an additional hero named Sierra coming soon.

These developments arrive after years of setbacks for Overwatch’s esports ecosystem. The Overwatch League, which represented a significant investment by Blizzard, ultimately failed to achieve its esports ambitions. Overwatch 2’s launch was met with mixed reception from the community, further damaging the franchise’s competitive credibility.

The shift back toward 6v6 gameplay and the influx of new heroes represent Blizzard’s attempt to recapture interest in Overwatch as a competitive title. Industry observers will be watching closely to see whether these changes successfully restore Overwatch’s position as a tier-one esport.
