Ex-Bethesda Exec Pete Hines Explains Why He Left, And He Didn’t Mince Words

Pete Hines, head of publishing at Bethesda Softworks for over 24 years, announced his retirement in 2023 following the release of Starfield. In a recent interview, Hines provided candid commentary on his departure, revealing significant dissatisfaction with the studio’s current direction.

Hines explained that he reached a breaking point where he “could not spend the rest of my life doing something that wasn’t for me.” Despite initial feelings of obligation to stay—believing the company still needed him—he ultimately recognized his inability to effect meaningful change. In particularly stark language, Hines suggested Bethesda was being “damaged and broken apart and frankly mistreated, abused,” stating he “couldn’t protect it” from further harm.

While his comments implicitly critique Bethesda’s management under Microsoft ownership, Hines notably refrained from directly naming Microsoft or identifying specific individuals or events. His departure marks the loss of a high-profile industry figure who had been central to establishing Bethesda’s reputation through landmark franchises including The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.
