Roblox is introducing age-based accounts for children and teens
Roblox is introducing two new age-based account types launching in June to provide age-appropriate experiences and enhanced safety protections for younger users. Roblox Kids accounts, for ages 5-8, will disable all communication features and restrict access to experiences with ‘Minimal’ or ‘Mild’ content maturity ratings. Roblox Select accounts for ages 9-15 will enable communication by default while limiting access to content rated up to ‘Moderate’ maturity levels. All content accessible to these age groups will undergo a three-step approval and evaluation process.
The rollout includes expanded parental controls and mandatory age verification technology. Users attempting to access content intended for those 9 and older must complete age verification; those who skip it will only access family-friendly games. The platform will leverage previously announced facial-recognition software for age verification purposes.
The announcement addresses mounting criticism over Roblox’s child safety practices. The platform faces multiple state lawsuits alleging inadequate protection of children, and recent incidents including a grooming case have intensified pressure for improved safeguards. CEO David Baszucki stated that child well-being is the company’s “highest priority.” The new account structure unifies content access, communication settings, and parental controls into a cohesive framework designed to align with each age group’s developmental needs and safety requirements.
