TFT dev Noëmi Couté reveals the design process behind Set 17
Teamfight Tactics (TFT), Riot Games’ acclaimed auto-battler, is introducing its 17th set, titled Space Gods, as the game enters its sixth year. The new set brings players to a space-themed setting populated by fantastical celestial beings offering rewards and alliances.
The most significant change in Set 17 is the replacement of the Carousel, a core mechanic since TFT’s launch. The Carousel traditionally served as an economic balancing feature, allowing lower-health players to catch up with their competition by providing equal shopping opportunities. In its place, Riot is introducing the Realm of the Gods, a new marketplace mechanic where celestial deities offer players rewards based on their favor.
According to TFT developer Noëmi Couté, this design shift represents a major swing for the development team. The decision to replace such a fundamental system reflects the team’s commitment to keeping TFT fresh and distinct with each new set. Each set in TFT’s live-service model operates as a distinct season with its own mechanics, themes, and gameplay systems.
The replacement of the Carousel marks a significant evolution in how players will manage their economy and progression within a TFT match. By introducing a deity-based marketplace system, Riot is reimagining the social and strategic elements of team building while maintaining the core appeal of auto-battler gameplay.
