Feature: Lexar: Gamers Are Willing to Sacrifice RAM, but 512GB SSDs Are a Step Too Far
The artificial intelligence boom has created severe global flash memory shortages that are reshaping PC gaming hardware economics. The resulting supply constraints have dramatically increased prices for gaming staples including DRAM, SSDs, and memory cards, forcing PC builders to make difficult specification trade-offs when assembling or upgrading systems.
According to Lexar Europe General Manager Grace Su, PC builders exhibit surprising selectivity when facing elevated hardware costs due to memory scarcity. Rather than accepting uniform compromises across all components, builders demonstrate varying willingness to sacrifice on different specifications. Su noted that Lexar responded to these market dynamics by strategically sourcing lower-density flash memory to produce smaller-capacity products, including Micro SD cards, RAM kits, and SSDs.
Su shared these insights during a media tour of Lexar’s manufacturing operations across major Chinese tech centers—Shenzhen, Suzhou, Zhongshan, and Shanghai—underscoring the critical importance of Asia-Pacific production infrastructure to global gaming hardware supply chains. The AI-driven memory shortage has pushed many gamers to delay hardware purchases entirely or settle for lower-specification builds as cost-saving measures. The resulting market dynamics reveal specific priorities among PC builders regarding which components are worth premium pricing and which represent acceptable compromise areas.
