‘AI experts’ disagree with the public about whether it’s a good thing

A significant gap exists between AI industry professionals and the general public regarding artificial intelligence’s impact on employment, according to research from Stanford University’s Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence group. The study found that 73% of people working in AI believe the technology will be beneficial for jobs, while only 23% of US adults surveyed share this optimistic outlook.

The stark disparity—a 50-point gap between the two groups—highlights a fundamental disagreement about AI’s trajectory and potential consequences in the job market. The data suggests that those directly involved in AI development and implementation maintain significantly more positive views about employment outcomes than the broader population, raising questions about whether industry familiarity breeds confidence or whether public concerns about job displacement and workforce disruption are warranted.
