Amazon is downscaling cloud video game service Luna
Amazon is significantly scaling back Luna, its cloud gaming service that launched in 2020, with multiple changes taking effect immediately and in the coming months. Effective immediately, individual game purchases are no longer available on the platform. More concerning for existing users, all games purchased directly from Luna will become completely non-functional starting June 10, 2026, with Amazon declining to offer refunds.
Beyond closing the storefront, Amazon is also discontinuing access to external game stores and third-party subscription services integrated into the platform. This includes removal of the EA Store, GOG, and Ubisoft store access, along with discontinuation of popular subscriptions like Jackbox Games and Ubisoft+. These partnerships represented a significant portion of Luna’s available content library.
As a gesture of goodwill for user loyalty, Luna users will receive a complimentary Luna Premium subscription. Despite this offering, the changes represent a substantial reduction in the platform’s functionality and available games. The move raises broader concerns about game preservation and the inherent risks of cloud gaming platforms where players don’t retain permanent ownership of their digital purchases, a longstanding issue in the industry.
