Grandgear, a giant robot movie from Godzilla Minus One director, gets release date

Takashi Yamazaki, director of the acclaimed 2023 film Godzilla Minus One, is developing Grandgear, a live-action English-language giant robot movie. Sony Pictures has acquired distribution rights to the project, announcing a theatrical release date of February 18, 2028 at CinemaCon. J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot is attached to the production, with Yamazaki set to write and direct.

While no casting has been announced and production has not yet begun, Sony screened early test footage at CinemaCon featuring kaiju-style combat between two massive mecha. According to reports, the visual effects demonstrated a polished aesthetic, described as “fun and slicker than, say, the Pacific Rim universe.” Production is expected to begin in 2027.

The project represents another major international film venture for Yamazaki following the extraordinary worldwide success of Godzilla Minus One, which became the first Japanese film in decades to achieve mainstream global box office success. With backing from both Sony Pictures and Bad Robot, Grandgear appears positioned as an ambitious blockbuster entry in the mecha genre, potentially revitalizing mainstream interest in giant robot films.
