Marathon mid-season update nerfs claymore drones, thermal scopes, and buffs being kind to strangers
Bungie has released mid-season update 1.0.6 for Marathon, its extraction shooter, introducing substantial balance changes and new systems designed to encourage player cooperation.
The headline feature is C.A.R.R.I. (CyberAcme Runner Reinforcement Initiative), a reward system that incentivizes both coordinated squads and solo players to help teammates. Players earn CyberAcme Commendations for completing contract objectives and successfully extracting together, which can be spent on weapons, reputation boosts, and other items from the C.A.R.R.I. Armory. This system will be available exclusively through the end of Season 1.
The update introduces “Stay Together,” an experimental feature encouraging players to remain with the runners. Bungie has also added a “Mercy Kit” that allows players to revive strangers they encounter during matches, further emphasizing cooperative gameplay.
On the combat side, the patch brings significant balance adjustments. Claymore drones—previously one of the game’s most popular strategies—have been removed. Thermal scopes, arguably Marathon’s most powerful weapon attachment, have received a nerf. The Recon class has been substantially buffed, gaining the ability to differentiate between bots and actual players when scanning the map, while tracker drones have been improved to better fulfill their tracking role.
The patch adds 11 new weapon variants and includes quality-of-life improvements and season pass reward enhancements. Overall, update 1.0.6 represents a significant shift toward emphasizing teamwork and cooperation over individual performance, while rebalancing the competitive sandbox to address dominant strategies and weapons.
