Microsoft’s already pricey Surface laptops have suddenly got a whole lot pricier and you know exactly what to blame for this
Microsoft has announced significant price increases across its Surface laptop lineup, with some models now costing $500 more than their original launch prices. Entry-level Surface models now start at over $1,000, while flagship variants begin at $1,500. These substantial increases have raised concerns about the product line’s competitiveness in the premium laptop market.
The price hikes have been attributed to a RAM crisis, which continues to impact the broader PC market. Microsoft appears to be passing these increased component costs directly to consumers, making Surface laptops significantly more expensive than alternative options in the same performance tier.
In response to the price increases, Microsoft is offering a 38% discount on the Surface Laptop (7th Edition) to help offset the sticker shock for potential buyers. However, this promotional pricing may only be temporary, as the company confirms the new higher prices are the standard going forward.
Industry commentators have noted that the price increases make Surface laptops less competitive when compared to Apple’s MacBook and iPad lineups, as well as third-party Windows-based laptops from other manufacturers. At the new price points, it’s become increasingly difficult to justify a Surface purchase over alternatives that offer comparable specifications at lower cost.
