Nintendo almost ruined its iconic Mii in an upcoming Switch game
Nintendo has experimented with modernizing the iconic Mii character design for the upcoming Switch game Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream, according to the publisher.
The Mii have remained largely unchanged since their introduction on the Nintendo Wii over 20 years ago, maintaining a minimalist, cartoonish appearance despite significant advances in console hardware. With the Switch version of Tomodachi Life, developers explored the opportunity to enhance the characters’ visual sophistication with more graphically advanced designs.
In Tomodachi Life, players design and manage a virtual island populated with customized Mii residents who interact with each other and engage in humorous scenarios. The original Tomodachi Life was released on the 3DS, making the Switch transition a natural moment to consider graphical updates.
However, after developing more advanced visual elements for the Mii characters, Nintendo ultimately decided to preserve the classic design philosophy. The decision reflects the company’s commitment to maintaining the recognizable character aesthetic that has remained consistent across multiple generations of gaming consoles.
