GTA Online is still making Rockstar Games around $1.3 million per day on average

On April 11, hacker group ShinyHunters breached Rockstar Games and demanded a $200,000 ransom for stolen company data. When Rockstar refused to pay, the group released the information publicly on April 13, 2026.

Rather than containing sensitive development secrets, the leaked data primarily revealed financial information about Rockstar’s live-service games. Most strikingly, GTA Online generates approximately $1.3 million per day in revenue—roughly $10 million per week—primarily from Shark Card sales and GTA+ memberships.

The platform breakdown revealed PlayStation’s dominance, accounting for 64% of GTA Online’s weekly revenue. The PS5 nearly doubles the active player base of the PS4, which itself outperforms Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. Consoles collectively significantly outpace PC spending.

No source code for Grand Theft Auto 6 (scheduled for November 2026) or other critical development information was compromised. The irony proved significant: the hackers inadvertently publicized how extraordinarily profitable Rockstar’s franchises are. Rather than damaging Take-Two Interactive’s reputation, the parent company’s stock value actually increased by over $1 billion the trading day after the leak, with share prices rising 2.63%.

The incident provided rare insight into the financial engine driving Rockstar Games’ operations and underscored GTA Online’s status as one of gaming’s most profitable titles.
