Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream Was In Development For Almost A Decade
Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, an upcoming Switch exclusive, has been in development since 2017—nearly nine years before its April 16 release. Game director Ryutaro Takahashi revealed that the extended development period allowed the team to incorporate “nine years’ worth of ideas” into the social simulation title.
Development began after the team had completed work on Miitomo, a mobile companion app. Producer Yoshio Sakamoto and Takahashi, who both maintain a special attachment to the Tomodachi Life franchise, have been directly involved throughout the project. The game continues the beloved social simulation series, building on the previous entry released for Nintendo 3DS.
The lengthy development cycle reflects Nintendo’s commitment to creating a substantial entry in the franchise. By taking nearly a decade to develop Living the Dream, the team was able to accumulate and integrate numerous creative ideas into the final product. The extended gestation period suggests Nintendo prioritized polish and content depth over rushing the project to market, resulting in a game packed with creative vision refined across nearly a decade of development.
