‘This Is One Of The Main Reasons It’s Taking So Long’ - Truck Simulator Dev Shares Xbox & PS5 Update
SCS Software has revealed why the console ports of American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator 2 are taking longer than expected since their August 2025 announcement for PlayStation 5 and Xbox. The developer explained significant technical challenges are delaying the release.
In a YouTube “Road to Consoles Dev Talk,” SCS Software disclosed that their engine has been in continuous development for nearly 30 years. Over decades, developers implemented numerous small workarounds and shortcuts to maintain functionality and performance on PC. To bring these games to consoles, the studio must now undertake extensive code rewrites to “untangle” and remediate these accumulated technical shortcuts.
This refactoring process represents a major undertaking, as the legacy codebase contains deep interdependencies requiring careful decoupling to function properly on PlayStation and Xbox architectures. Rather than simply porting the existing PC version, SCS Software is fundamentally restructuring core systems to ensure stability and optimal performance on console hardware.
The developer’s candid explanation provides insight into the realities of porting long-running game engines to new platforms, particularly when codebases have evolved organically over decades. While no new release timeline was provided, the transparency suggests console versions will arrive once critical refactoring efforts are complete.
