UK government commits £28.5 million to supporting local game developers

The UK government has announced a £30 million investment package to support its video game industry through the Games Growth Package. The funding comprises £28.5 million distributed via the UK Games Fund and £1.5 million allocated to the London Games Festival over three years.

This investment represents a doubling of government support for the gaming sector and is part of the broader Creative Industries Sector Plan, aimed at accelerating economic growth. The initiative enables independent developers and studios throughout the UK to access targeted grants suited to different stages of development.

The UK Games Fund operates through three grant categories. The Entry Track provides up to £20,000 for newly formed studios with limited track records, lowering barriers to entry for aspiring developers. The Emergent Track offers up to £100,000 to support game prototype development. The Expansion Track awards up to £250,000 to facilitate project completion and studio growth.

This multi-tiered funding structure is designed to support the full spectrum of UK game development activity, from startup ventures to established studios seeking to scale operations and complete major projects.
