TIGA: PC and console continue to drive UK games development

According to new data from UK trade body TIGA, personal computers and consoles remain the dominant platforms for game development in the UK, while mobile gaming continues to lose momentum.

Nearly half of UK game studios—46% according to exclusive figures shared with GamesIndustry.biz—have PC as their primary development platform. This trend is even more pronounced among newer companies, with 56% of start-ups founded between May 2024 and September 2025 targeting PC as their main focus.

Console platforms have increased their share of the industry’s overall employment, rising from 47.2% to 50% of total jobs during the survey period. However, this growth is not driven by studio expansion; console-focused studios actually experienced a 2.1% decrease in headcount during the same timeframe, suggesting that higher-paying roles or consolidation within existing studios are driving employment growth.

Mobile gaming, once considered a growth area, continues to decline in the UK. The proportion of studios developing for mobile platforms fell from 33% to 31.6%, while their share of total industry jobs dropped more significantly from 19% to 17.9%. This represents a continuing erosion of mobile development’s importance to the UK games industry, with resources and focus shifting toward traditional gaming platforms.
