Apple rubberstamps an open source driver to allow Nvidia GPUs to run on Macs, though gaming isn’t on the table just yet
Apple has officially endorsed an open-source driver that enables Nvidia GPUs to function on macOS systems. The development reverses years of incompatibility that began when Apple transitioned to its proprietary rendering API, effectively cutting off support for Nvidia graphics cards on Mac computers.
The new driver targets professional and developer use cases, particularly supporting Nvidia’s CUDA ecosystem for compute-intensive workloads. However, the implementation explicitly excludes gaming functionality at this stage, limiting its immediate consumer appeal.
This marks a significant shift in Apple’s stance toward third-party GPU support on its platform, though the practical impact remains unclear given the company’s historical preference for its own integrated graphics solutions and recent focus on Apple Silicon chips.
