“We had this problem before in the games we created with CD Projekt”: Blood of Dawnwalker CEO defends use of AI voice placeholders to save time

Rebel Wolves CEO Konrad Tomaszkiewicz has clarified that The Blood of Dawnwalker, an open world vampire RPG, used AI-generated voice acting during early development as placeholder dialogue for prototyping quests and testing narrative content. He emphasized that no generated voices appear in the final game.

The practice served as a cost-saving measure, allowing the studio to iterate on quest design and dialogue flow without repeatedly recording voice actors during the development process. Tomaszkiewicz cited his experience at CD Projekt Red on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 as precedent for this type of workflow challenge.

The approach represents a pragmatic use of AI as a development tool rather than as a replacement for professional voice talent in the shipped product. By using AI placeholders in early phases, developers can experiment with pacing and narrative structure before committing resources to final voice performances. Tomaszkiewicz’s comments come as the industry continues to debate the role of AI in game development.
