Call of Duty League’s GM Explains What Fans Should Do During the Off Season
Daniel Tsay, General Manager of Call of Duty Esports at Activision, provided insights into the state of competitive Call of Duty during an interview at the DreamHack Birmingham Major. The conversation revealed Activision’s strategic priorities for the esports ecosystem, including a concerted effort to expand the league’s presence and appeal in European markets.
A central topic in the discussion was the Call of Duty League’s annual scheduling structure, which creates a substantial gap between competitive seasons. The league typically concludes its season in June or July, with competition not resuming until December or January the following year—a gap of several months that can result in disconnection between competitive events and fan engagement. To address this challenge and maintain audience interest during the off-season, Tsay outlined the organization’s recommendation for fans: watch other Call of Duty esports events that take place throughout the off-season period.
This guidance reflects Activision’s broader strategy to keep the Call of Duty competitive community engaged year-round. By directing fans toward alternative Call of Duty esports competitions and content during the league’s dormant period, the company aims to sustain momentum and prevent the complete loss of competitive viewership during the extended break. The approach acknowledges the challenge of maintaining fan investment across a sport with a fragmented competitive calendar and represents one of several efforts underway to strengthen the Call of Duty esports ecosystem.
