Report: New Xbox chief says Game Pass ‘has become too expensive’

Microsoft’s new Xbox chief Asha Sharma has stated that Game Pass has become too expensive for players, according to an internal memo obtained by The Verge. Sharma indicated that the company needs to develop “a better value equation” for the subscription service.

In the memo to Xbox employees, Sharma acknowledged that while Game Pass is “central to gaming value on Xbox,” the current subscription model is not the final version the company intends to offer. She emphasized that in the short term, addressing the service’s pricing is a priority to improve affordability for players.

Looking ahead, Microsoft plans to evolve Game Pass into a more flexible system, though Sharma noted this evolution will require time to test and learn from. This comes following Microsoft’s November redesign of its Xbox subscription offerings, which aimed to provide greater flexibility, choice, and value to subscribers.

The statement suggests Microsoft recognizes pricing concerns among its player base and is exploring adjustments to make the service more competitive and accessible in an increasingly crowded subscription gaming market.
