Next God of War game will explore multiple mythologies, report suggests
Sony Santa Monica Studio is reportedly developing an unannounced prequel to the God of War franchise that will explore multiple mythologies, marking a departure from the series’ previous focus on singular mythological settings like Greek and Norse.
According to MP1st, the game will shift perspective from protagonist Kratos, who will not be playable but is expected to appear in the story. Instead, players will take on the role of Faye, Kratos’ deceased partner from the Norse era. The character will be joined by Tyr, the Norse god of war, as a companion throughout the adventure.
The title will broaden its mythological scope considerably, incorporating East Asian elements including Chinese and Japanese mythology. Unconfirmed reports also suggest Mayan mythology may feature in the game. Additionally, the game will include Arthurian elements, with a talking sword reportedly named Merlin appearing as a companion alongside a “gelatinous cube” character.
The new entry is being positioned as “a new franchise within the God of War universe” rather than a mainline sequel, allowing the developers to explore different mythological themes and storytelling approaches. However, MP1st notes that game development remains subject to change, so these details may evolve before an official announcement from Sony. The game is expected to be formally unveiled by Sony in the near future.
