“The most fun I’ve had in the last week playing” - Marathon players react to the mid-season update, and its new friendly-first features
Marathon, Bungie’s live-service PvE extraction shooter, received a substantial mid-season update introducing multiple gameplay refinements and a novel social initiative. The update includes weapon balance adjustments, new cosmetics, additional Reward Pass content, Runner shell tuning, earnable Arachne shell styles, and new equipment options.
The marquee feature is C.A.R.R.I (CyberAcme Runner Reinforcement Initiative), a new protocol designed to foster cooperative and friendly interactions within Marathon’s traditionally competitive playerbase. The system rewards players for assisting enemy players with contract completion, extracting from the map together, and maintaining pleasant conduct in the game world of Tau Ceti. Players accumulate commendations through these cooperative actions, which can be exchanged for faction XP boosts and other rewards.
The rewards structure is deliberately tuned to support newer and mid-progression players while maintaining benefits for veteran players. This design reflects Bungie’s stated goal of making Marathon more accessible and casual-friendly, moving away from the game’s historically ruthless competitive culture. Early player reactions have been positive, with community members highlighting the C.A.R.R.I feature as particularly engaging and fun.
