Seems like opting out of website cookies doesn’t actually guarantee you are opted out of website cookies

A recent audit by webXray has revealed a significant privacy concern regarding cookie consent mechanisms on major websites. The investigation found that despite users being asked about and attempting to opt out of cookie tracking, large technology companies continue collecting user data regardless of these opt-out requests.

Websites increasingly present cookie notices requesting permission to store files that track user preferences and enable data collection for advertising and analytics purposes. However, the webXray audit indicates that many major technology firms ignore opt-out choices and maintain tracking regardless. This practice raises serious questions about whether corporations genuinely respect user privacy decisions and may constitute violations of data protection regulations like GDPR, which explicitly require companies to honor user consent decisions.

The findings suggest that cookie consent frameworks, while appearing to grant users control over their personal data, may be largely performative when it comes to enforcement by major technology companies.
