Weapons and Resident Evil director Zach Cregger is making a sci-fi movie next
Zach Cregger, the acclaimed horror director behind Barbarian and the Resident Evil reboot, is pivoting to science fiction for his next directorial project. Titled The Flood, the film marks an original screenplay written and directed by Cregger—a significant genre departure from his previous horror work.
Warner Bros., which backed Cregger’s film Weapons, is financing the project with a scheduled theatrical release on August 11, 2028. Amblin Entertainment, Steven Spielberg’s production company, is also involved in the venture, lending additional prestige to the production.
While plot details have not been disclosed, Cregger has previously spoken enthusiastically about the screenplay. In a 2025 podcast interview, he described it as “my favorite thing” and “maybe the best thing I ever wrote.” The combination of a respected horror filmmaker entering the science fiction space alongside backing from a major studio and Spielberg’s production company suggests this could be a notable entry in the sci-fi genre.
