Sony’s MIA Live-Service Game Is Going In The Exact Direction You’d Expect
Sony’s upcoming live-service game Fairgame$ has been confirmed as a free-to-play extraction shooter, marking Sony’s continued investment in the competitive multiplayer genre despite recent struggles in the space.
Originally announced in 2023 as a “competitive heist experience,” new details about Fairgame$ have emerged through documentation related to an upcoming playtest. The game will operate on a free-to-play model, relying on in-game purchases rather than an upfront entry fee for monetization.
Haven Studios, Sony’s internal development team, is continuing development of the title. One of the game’s flagship modes, Cargo Heist, follows a three-phase structure. The first phase, Break In, requires players to locate a vault code and collect cash to upgrade their abilities. The second phase, Drill, sees players breach the vault and fight to gather cargo. The final phase, Extract, presumably involves escaping with the collected loot—a format typical of the extraction shooter genre.
The confirmation comes at a notable moment for Sony’s live-service ambitions. The company recently saw Marathon, another extraction shooter backed by Bungie and developed with substantial budget, receive a muted market reception. This has led to scrutiny of PlayStation Studios’ current portfolio strategy and their commitment to the live-service space.
While details remain limited pending the playtest, Fairgame$ appears designed to deliver a competent extraction shooter experience with the heist theme providing thematic distinction. The game is in active development for PlayStation 5, with further gameplay details expected as development progresses.
