Fortnite Adds AI-Powered NPCs as Creative Experimental Feature
Epic Games announced that AI-powered NPCs are coming to Fortnite Creative as an experimental feature with the April 16 update. The feature, known as the Conversations system (previously called the Persona device), allows Fortnite developers to create AI-powered characters with distinct personalities and voices that can interact with players.
These AI characters are designed to “talk, react, and respond to player actions,” enabling developers to build more dynamic and interactive experiences within Fortnite’s Creative mode. This marks a significant expansion of AI tools in the game, following the introduction of an AI-voiced Darth Vader character that was recruitable in Fortnite during 2025.
The Conversations system’s experimental status indicates that the feature is still in early testing phases, suggesting Epic Games plans to refine and expand the tool before a full release. This move reflects a broader industry trend of integrating generative AI technology into game development, allowing creators to more efficiently populate their games with responsive characters. Epic Games appears committed to eventually deploying these AI tools more widely across the Fortnite ecosystem.
