Ludum Dare will officially end in October 2028
Ludum Dare, the influential long-running game jam that has fostered the creation of acclaimed indie titles including Celeste and Inscryption, will officially conclude in October 2028. Event co-founder Mike Kasprzak announced the news in a blog post, revealing plans to host six additional events over the next three years before the final scheduled jam.
Kasprzak acknowledged the possibility of extending beyond the October 2028 deadline, noting that the momentum and enjoyment from the “big six-four” event might inspire additional competitions. He has indicated interest in potentially hosting an encore event in April 2029, though he explicitly stated that October 2028 would mark the end of the regularly scheduled Ludum Dare competitions.
The game jam has been a significant part of gaming culture for decades, serving as a launching pad for independent developers to showcase creative projects under time constraints. The announcement marks the beginning of the end for one of the industry’s most recognizable recurring game development events, with Kasprzak carefully emphasizing his choice of words about “scheduled” events, leaving open the possibility of continuation in some form beyond the official closure date.
