3 ways The Mandalorian and Grogu brings back old-school Star Wars filmmaking
Director Jon Favreau is bringing together legacy Star Wars creators for his upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu, drawing on old-school filmmaking techniques despite George Lucas’s decade-long absence from the franchise.
Favreau has assembled a creative council of Star Wars veterans to ensure the film captures the proper tone and style. Dave Filoni, described as Lucas’s closest equivalent to a padawan, now serves as head of Lucasfilm. Doug Chiang, who worked as design director on Episodes I and II, has taken on the role of executive creative director. John Knoll, who supervised visual effects on the prequel trilogy, now serves as chief creative officer of Industrial Light & Magic.
The film represents an attempt to return to classical Star Wars filmmaking methods while leveraging the expertise of those who helped define the franchise during its prequel era. By assembling this “Jedi High Council” of veteran creatives, Favreau aims to ensure the new film maintains continuity with Star Wars’ established visual language and storytelling traditions, even as the franchise moves forward under new directorial leadership.
