Spaceballs 2’s new title is actually an outrage. Here’s why.

Legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks announced the official title for the upcoming Spaceballs sequel at CinemaCon, revealing it will be called Spaceballs: The New One rather than the long-promised Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.

The original 1978 sci-fi comedy featured a meta-joke in which the character Master Yogurt (played by Brooks) promised viewers that a sequel with that specific title would arrive. The joke was a self-aware jab at Hollywood sequels and their pursuit of profit. After decades of waiting, fans and critics expressed disappointment that Brooks and the production team deviated from this established punchline.

Brooks offered a tongue-in-cheek explanation for the title change, joking that he “found the money” in his basement. While intended as humorous, the departure from the original film’s promised sequel title sparked discussion about whether the change undermines the decades-old joke that defined the Spaceballs franchise’s legacy.
