Roblox to pay over $12m to state of Nevada in child safety settlement
Roblox has agreed to a substantial settlement with the state of Nevada addressing child safety concerns on its platform. Under the agreement, the company will pay more than $12 million, including $10 million distributed over three years for youth programs within Nevada and $2.5 million allocated toward an online safety awareness campaign and support for a law enforcement liaison position.
The settlement mandates several protections to be implemented nationwide across the Roblox platform. These include enhanced age verification systems for all users, continuous monitoring of account activity to identify potential safety risks, and restrictions on sending notifications to minor users during nighttime hours.
The resolution came after Nevada state officials initiated discussions with Roblox in anticipation of potential litigation regarding child safety practices. Rather than proceeding to formal legal action, the parties reached an agreement that addresses the state’s concerns while imposing significant financial and operational commitments on the platform.
This settlement reflects the increasing regulatory scrutiny facing gaming platforms and social media services regarding the protection of underage users. As companies operating user-generated content platforms face mounting pressure to implement stronger safeguarding measures, Roblox’s agreement with Nevada demonstrates both the importance placed on child safety by regulators and the evolving landscape of compliance requirements for major gaming platforms.
