“I’d say mission achieved for this one”: Stop Killing Games on the latest European Commission public hearing
The European Citizens Initiative Stop Killing Games, focused on video game preservation, took a significant step forward with a public hearing held before three European Parliament committees: IMCO, JURI, and PETI. The initiative, which aims to address the issue of games being delisted and destroyed due to licensing expiration and other commercial pressures, was presented by founder Ross Scott and organizer Moritz Katzner.
Following the hearing, both representatives expressed satisfaction with the outcome, with Katzner describing the reception as “absolutely incredible” and Scott characterizing the session as “mission achieved.” The pair subsequently held a press conference to discuss the proceedings, which they livestreamed to their supporters.
The Stop Killing Games initiative seeks to combat the permanent loss of video games to players and preservation efforts when publishers remove them from digital storefronts or shut down servers. The hearing represented formal recognition of the initiative by European legislative bodies and demonstrated institutional engagement with concerns about game preservation at the policy level.
