Ubisoft Halifax union members agree settlement after studio closure

Ubisoft Halifax, a mobile-focused studio, was shut down in January 2026, impacting all 71 employees at the facility. The closure occurred just weeks after 61 of those workers voted to unionize under CWA Canada Local 30111 (the Game & Media Workers Guild of Canada). The timing raised concerns about potential union-busting, prompting the union to file a legal complaint.

The unionized workers have now voted overwhelmingly in favor of a settlement agreement with Ubisoft. While the specific terms of the settlement and compensation amounts remain confidential, the agreement represents a resolution to the dispute following the sudden studio closure. Former Ubisoft Halifax employee Jon Huffman expressed gratitude to CWA Canada for negotiating the settlement package on behalf of the affected workers.

The settlement concludes a significant labor dispute in the gaming industry, where studio closures and layoffs have become increasingly common. This case gained particular attention due to the proximate timing of the unionization and closure, raising questions about management’s response to workers’ organizing efforts.
