Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 voice actor Charlie Cox has finally played “a bit” of the game that landed him a Best Performance nomination, though he says he isn’t very good at it
Actor Charlie Cox, known for his role as Daredevil, has finally played some of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33—the acclaimed JRPG for which he provided voice acting for the character Gustav. Cox’s performance earned him a Game Awards nomination for Best Performance, marking his first foray into video game acting.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Cox revealed he has only played “a bit” of the game, specifically the opening sequences, and admitted he isn’t particularly skilled at it. “I’ve played the opening bit for a while and kind of walked around and met the people and garnered the information and all that kind of stuff. Not very well. I’m not very good,” he said, displaying characteristic humility about his gaming abilities.
Cox’s unusual relationship with the game stems from his limited involvement in production. He provided only voice acting for Gustav, while another actor, Maxence Cazorla, performed the motion capture work separately. This division of labor meant Cox’s recording sessions were minimal. The arrangement previously left him feeling like a “total fraud” when fans praised the game’s success, as he felt disconnected from the full creative effort behind Gustav’s character.
The actor’s recent playthrough represents a meaningful moment, allowing him to finally experience firsthand the work for which he gained recognition from enthusiastic gaming communities worldwide.
