Hulu to Adapt Penn Cole’s Spark of the Everflame Romantasy Series
Hulu has acquired the rights to adapt Penn Cole’s Kindred’s Curse Saga for television, with the adaptation titled Everflame and based on the first book in the series, Spark of the Everflame. The move represents part of a growing trend of romantasy adaptations coming to streaming services.
Heidi Cole McAdams, a writer and producer known for her work on The 100, Death And Other Details, and Stumptown, has been brought on as co-creator, writer, and producer for the project. Cole McAdams’ experience with serialized storytelling and character-driven narratives positions her to develop the source material for the screen.
The story follows Diem Bellator, a healer navigating life in the magical realm of Emarion. Once inhabited by immortal beings known as the Kindred, the land is now governed by the Descended—the scions of these ancient immortals. The narrative centers on Diem’s complicated entanglement with Luther Corbois, the Prince of Lumnos and member of Emarion’s most powerful noble houses. Their connection drives what appears to be a slow-burn romance, fitting squarely within the romantasy subgenre that blends fantasy worldbuilding with romantic tension and character development.
The adaptation joins a slate of romantasy projects in development, reflecting the entertainment industry’s increased focus on this hybrid genre.
