Panic won’t release Playdate titles that use certain forms of generative AI
Panic, the developer behind the Playdate handheld console, announced it will no longer publish games that use generative AI to create art, audio, music, text, or dialogue on its Playdate Catalog storefront. Additionally, Playdate Season 3—a premium weekly curated collection—will not feature any titles that used generative AI in any capacity.
The policy includes one notable exception: developers may use AI coding assistance tools like GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT without restriction. This distinction reflects an emerging industry perspective that separates development workflow aids from generative content creation.
The announcement came after Wheelsprung, a game that used GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT for both coding and writing assistance, was included in Playdate Season 2. Panic acknowledged the game “slipped under the radar” because the company had not clearly communicated its generative AI stance at the time.
Panic’s policy represents one of the gaming industry’s more restrictive approaches to generative AI content, prioritizing human-created creative assets while acknowledging the practical role of AI development tools. The decision signals a potential shift toward greater transparency and developer accountability regarding generative AI use in game creation.
