BAFTA pulls game trailer over ’themes that may be a trigger’ even after developer revision

BAFTA has withdrawn the game trailer for The Quiet Things, developed by Silver Script Games founder Alyx Jones, from being showcased at the BAFTA awards ceremony. The organization cited concerns over “themes that may be a trigger” as the reason for the removal.

The game is a personal project for Jones, designed to tell a story about trauma, abuse, survival, and to give survivors a voice. After BAFTA initially raised concerns, the developer revised the trailer in an attempt to address the organization’s worries. Despite these revisions, BAFTA still chose to pull the trailer from the event, with Jones receiving notification of the decision by phone the night before the awards ceremony.

Jones publicly announced the incident through a LinkedIn post, drawing attention to the controversial decision. The withdrawal raises questions about content moderation practices within the gaming industry and how major institutions handle games addressing serious subjects like trauma and mental health. The incident highlights ongoing debate about whether serious, personal narratives exploring difficult themes are being unfairly restricted from industry visibility and promotional opportunities.
