Gears of War film director insists “that movie will happen”
Gears of War is officially getting a film adaptation in development with Netflix. Director David Leitch, known for the action film Fall Guy, is attached to direct the project. Leitch confirmed to Collider that the movie is progressing well, with a strong script draft currently in development. Netflix has pledged full support for the project, with Leitch stating the studio is “100 percent behind it” and “more determined than ever to make it.”
The film is being developed in partnership between Netflix, 87North (Leitch’s production company working with Kelly McCormick), and The Coalition, the developer of the Gears of War franchise. The project also features Jon Spaihts, whose screenplay adaptation of Dune earned an Oscar nomination, indicating a serious commitment to quality writing for the adaptation.
This announcement comes after Leitch was initially revealed to be in talks for the director role last summer. The involvement of high-profile creative talent suggests Netflix is treating the Gears of War film as a significant project, attempting to adapt a major gaming franchise known for its intense action and gameplay into a theatrical film experience.
