Metro Creator Doesn’t Think 2039 Should Be ‘Called a Game’
4A Games has unveiled Metro 2039, the next major entry in its post-apocalyptic franchise, following years of development. The game returns players to the Moscow metro system, continuing the series that began with Metro 2033 in 2010.
The new title carries significant thematic ambition, drawing influence from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Metro franchise creator Dmitry Glukhovsky has been actively promoting the project and made a notable statement suggesting Metro 2039 should transcend traditional game classification, positioning it as something beyond conventional entertainment.
Consistent with the franchise’s legacy, Metro 2039 explores mature and sensitive subject matter including genocide, slavery, war, and torture. Developers have indicated the game aims to be among the darkest titles released to mainstream audiences, underscoring its commitment to exploring difficult themes within an interactive medium.
